Why Is Sheepskin So Great?

Stitched on soles are generally very durable, and can handle a lot more wear and tear. The Emu Shark and UGG Ultra shown below are great examples of the stitched on soles, which are much more rugged than some other styles of sheepskin boots, like classic styles that have a glued on EVA sole.

Stitched on soles are made with rubber, which provides much better traction, especially in colder temperatures. The rubber soles are usually shaped in such a way to have better "teeth" that create more friction with surfaces; thus, the rubber will not freeze even in extreme cold temperatures, which makes them much safer for wintery environments. Stitched on soles are also known as Lug soles, and they are typically more durable and longer-lasting than most other types of soles. If you want your sheepskin boots to last you probably should take a look at buying a boot from our Rugged Outdoor or Lug Sole categories.

Since they are all made of rubber, the different sheepskin brands have each creatively designed unique styles that shape the rubber to look very sleek and fashionable. The UGG Adirondack, shown to the right, is an example of a boot that has a rubber sole designed for a unique and fashionable style. Also, in the diagram shown to the far right, you can see how the rubber "teeth" on the rubber sole bottom can grip into the ground even in cold temperatures, to provide you with safety and traction.

The alternative to stitched on soles is glued on soles. Glued-on soles are made by gluing an EVA sole, which is basically a type of foam, to the bottom of the sheepskin boot.

EVA Sole Diagram
This type of sole can possibly freeze in cold temperatures, and can lack good grip or traction since the tread can wear off before too long. In general glued-on EVA soles are not as durable as stitched on rubber soles. However, glued-on soles are ideal for warmer environments because the EVA foam soles are much lighter in weight and can keep your feet cooler.

As seen to the left, glued-on EVA soles lack traction sometimes, on cold or snowy surfaces. However, they are great for warm environments as shown on the right. Because they can breathe a bit better. Some of the Lug Sole styles like the UGG Ultra are designed to trap in heat.

If you still want a rubber sole that's glued on, the Bearpaw Classic TPR sheepskin boots have a glued-on rubber sole, which gives you the flexibility of glued-on with the grip and traction of a rubber sole, making it great for almost any climate. Check out Bearpaw Classic TPR Sheepskin Boots here.

Most lug sole sheepskin boots, such as Koolaburra Lug Sole sheepskin boots, have removable insoles. To learn more about Koolaburra and other insoles, read our Sheepskin Insoles page.
